The Truth About Soul Mates

I do a lot of counseling and a very popular request I get of course is about love and relationships. Based on most of the concerns I hear…people still are under the impression that once you get with a soul mate then you are with someone who loves you for who you are and there can be a blissful connection shared between you two. If you would like to continue believing in that fairy tail then stop reading this post now. However if you would like to hear the truth…continue reading.

Before I explain the purpose of being with a soul mate I must first establish with you that love is a socially created and reinforced concept that throughout the ages in someway or form has been commercialized, sensationalized, and idealized to the point that people do not even know what love is anymore. What most people call love is in actuality romance. The funniest thing I hear is when people try and seperate ‘agape’ love from romantic love. Love IS agape as well as unconditional and without partiality. Other than that the idealized version of love we act like is real doesn’t at all exist. You can experience it in your own mind and share a powerful bond like that with someone…but that is ultimately just passion and affection…once again romance…but not love. Romance is a beautiful thing. Everyone wants it in their life…even the ones who feel too good for it. However mistaking it for love is probably the reason your unrealistic expectations have failed you yet again.

That being said when you wish and long for a soul mate in your life, what you are working on drawing towards you isn’t someone who is going to sweep you off your feet and spend all the valuable time in their day telling you how much they love you and want to make you happy while showering you with affection and showing you with their actions how they truly ‘love’ you. What you are actually attracting into your life are people (not just one person) who will reflect to you soul level issues you must learn and work through so that you can do what you couldn’t accomplish alone. Chances are these are most likely people you will either get along with at some level while also at times wishing you could strangle.

Your soul is a subtle (and not so subtle) part of you that is independent from your mind and emotions while at the same time wholy a part of who you are. As such these mental and emotional concepts of romance and passionate affection don’t register as importantly to the soul as much your ego hypes up its idealized existance. I say this because many of you are waiting for a soul mate when what you really want is a romantic partner…or a passion partner…or a friend with benefits. This is not bad to have at all by any means….however sidelining other people because they are not ‘soul mate potential’ which is basically a subtle way of saying they don’t fit your huge checklist of unrealistic expectations you have for them to fulfill is not only bad but just sets you up for more resentment and disappointment.

A true soul mate is someone who will help you tap into who you really are which is why you meet these people during times in your life when you are struggling to tap into your more true and authentic self. They remind you of how amazing your soul really is and guide you into reclaiming your power. This can be the teacher at your school whose professional demeanor inspires you to follow a similar path or even the annoying co worker you hate working with who reflects shadow aspects within your soul yet teaches you how not to be the person you abhor being. The best way to be with a soul mate is to be conscious of who you are a soul mate to. We can be so obsessed with being with one that we don’t ever reflect on the impact we have on other people and how we inspire them to be their truest self. It is how you treat others that will influence who you attract into your life.

I hope this post inspires you to throw away these romanticized myths and ideals of love into the trash and adopt a more realistic perspective towards love and romance. I want to sweep a lady off her feet and share the love in my heart with her as much as you want to experience passionate romance. However what I won’t do is label that lady my soul mate and pressure her to fulfill my unrealistic expectations. I will instead let her be herself and allow her to show me who that is while I show her my real self in return. Honesty, loyalty, and commitment has never done a relationship wrong the last time I checked.
